Why purple?

There is a twofold reason for choosing the color purple. First, during the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent the color purple is displayed to remind us that those are seasons of repentance. We are all sinners in need of God’s grace to progress from this life into the next.

Secondly, in the United States our two main political parties are represented by the colors red and blue. Catholic social teaching does not fit neatly into either the Democratic or Republican parties and as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops write in Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, “our participation in political parties or other groups to which we may belong should be influenced by our faith, not the other way around.” Because of this, I find myself, and I’m sure you do as well, needing to pick and choose across party lines. Hence, I find that I am more purple than red or blue.
